*Harvesting Wind Energy*
At first we did not realize that wind energy couldl give a significant contribution for Indonesian people civilization. But our beliefs proved wrong as Indonesian people for hundred years has become marine nations which utilize wind energy to drive millions of boats for fish sailing everyday. We can imagine how many tons of fuel will be waisted and create pollutions in comparison to using wind energy for make fishermen boats moving.
Wind along the coastal area blows in opposite direction at noon and at night. At noon the temperature in land is higher than on sea, therefore the wind blows from the sea to the land. However, at night the temperature in the land is colder than on the sea so the wind blows from the land to the sea. Wind along the coastal area always behave that way along the years.
In general, in dry season wind at coastal area blows approximately 15 hours a day whereas at rainy season only 10 hours a day. That big amount of wind can be explored and catched as an energy and saved afterwards. Then the energy can be used for daily activities such as for providing water and electricity.
The equipment that can be used for exploring wind energy is Wind Turbine. The work principal and application as long as the experience of wind energy usage will be presented in details at ‘Harvesting Wind Energy Workshop’ which will be held on Friday and Saturday at 9-10 April 2010. The workshop will also cover up the equipment which has been implemented and also a field trip.
This workshop will be guided by Dr. Ir. Hasan Hambali, an expert of wind energy which has gained awards from Indonesian Engineer Association or Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia (PII). He has been conducting research in wind energy usage in Indonesia for small scale electricity generator and direct water pump since 2000. His research is very interesting because the huge wind energy potential in Indonesia is only suitable to be explored with specific wind energy technology by using wind characteristics in this country. That wind turbine technology is not available in world market because the majority of wind turbine in the world is manufactured for wind condition which has high speed, relatively constant wind direction and wind intensity which does not change instantly. However, the wind characteristics in Indonesia is completely different with wind turbine characteristics in the world. Dr. Ir. Hasan Hambali states that his wind energy research which is called EGRA (Energi Gratis) has been tested and implemented in Indramayu Mega Farm since 2003 and in Bogor since mid 2009. His research is that EGRA wind turbine has been successful in operation and ready to be installed in all areas across Indonesia.
The workshop participant can be directly communicate with him including asking his experience in details of how to conduct the research of windmill phenomenon in Indonesia. This event is also an opportunity for participants to become a member of Indonesian Wind Energy Society or Masyarakat Energi Angin Indonesia (MEAI).
The presentation materials, hard copy and soft copy, will be given to the workshop participants, as well as stationary, lunch and snacks from Klappertaart Huise.
