TENORM Regulation and Radiation Exposure Risk
for the Mining, Oil & Gas, and Other Industries
February 10th – 12th , 2010 at Holiday Inn Hotel – Bandung
Instructor :
Ir. Suhartono Zahir, APU

BACKGROUND
The mining oil & gas industry is considered one of the most exposed industries to radiation hazards. The activities in the production, exploration and mining operations are exposed to Natural Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) or technology Enhance Natural Occurring Materials (TENORM). Workers employed in the area of cutting and reaming oilfield pipe, removing solids from tanks and pits, and refurbishing gas processing equipment may be exposed to particles containing levels of alpha-emitting radionuclide that could pose health risks if inhaled or ingested. Radioactive are invisible killer as their presence and danger cannot be detected with a naked eye.
Radiation exposure can lead to a number of long term illnesses like leukemia and cancer. Excessive exposure would certainly kill a person. The imminent danger of NORM has long been recognized in the western countries. The government trough its regulatory body has been monitoring the risks of NORM and TENORM for a number of years and, specifically in Indonesia. In July 2007, the Indonesia government through BAPETEN has passed a law that requires all mining, oil & gas industry to monitor and manage TENORM (Technologically-Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) at their operations areas (Peraturan Pemerintah No.33 Tahun 2007). For further technical regulation, The Chairman of BAPETEN was released Chairman Degree No.9 Year 2009 on “Intervensi Terhadap Paparan Yang Berasal Dari TENORM” it is expected that all the mining, oil & gas companies will fully comply.
To help the industry better prepared to meet the new law and regulations PT. Zenith Inti Pratama will co-organize a Special Training based on the new TENORM technical regulations.
During the workshop, the participants will have the opportunities to:
* Meet and hear direct explanations from ex Deputy Chairman BAPETEN, Ir. Suhartono Zahir, the key person from BAPETEN who was responsible for licensing and inspection on the use of nuclear Energy.
* Hear from Anne L. Awan – Head of Oil & Gas Industry Group from Asialab Group, on how to develop a first class Radiation Safety Management Systems (RSMS) for TENORM.
OUR TRAINING PROGRAM
Our comprehensive training program is designed to create awareness of the danger of radioactive materials that are inherent in the mining, oil & gas industry. Our training will also help your workers develop understanding of the principles can be applied to reduce risks of radiation exposure.
At the end of the training, the participants will:
· Have detailed knowledge and understanding of the government regulation of TENORM (Peraturan Pemerintah No.33 Tahun 2007 and PERKA BAPETEN No.9 Tahun 2009)
· Understanding the best practice of how to comply the regulation.
· Have detailed knowledge and understanding of radioactive materials in the mining, oil & gas operations and their hazards and risks to our health
· Understanding the best practice of how our workers can protect themselves from radiation risks and accidents
· Understand how radiation safety can be integrated with HSE management system
· Understand for NORM Monitoring
